Managing allergens in foods

Why are allergens in foods an issue?

Avoiding allergenic foods can be difficult for food allergy sufferers and in the past this has been made worse by the lack of requirement for full ingredient labelling in processed foodstuffs. This is changing now in the wake of new legislation and is summarised in this overview, "Managing food allergens".

The European Food Safety Authority scientific panel responsible for food allergies has also published an opinion on current knowledge and management of food allergens in the EFSA Journal (Opinion of the Scientific Panel on Dietetic Products, Nutrition and Allergies on a request from the Commission relating to the evaluation of allergenic foods for labelling purposesPDF file).

As well as managing the allergens we know about there is also a need to assess the allergenic risks posed by novel foods (including GMOs) and novel food processing procedures.
